A practical guide for attorneys navigating multilingual legal proceedings. This course will provide attorneys with an understanding of federal and state language access mandates including under Title VI of the Civil Rights of 1964, as well as the mechanics of litigating cases involving LEP clients, witnesses, and victims. Attendees will learn the best practices for working alongside interpreters in both virtual and in-person proceedings as well as an overview of the language access tools and services available within Idaho’s judicial districts.
Key topics include how to properly request interpreters, handling translated evidentiary documents, and ethical boundaries under the Rules of Professional Conduct when communication barriers arise. Participants will also learn to distinguish the legal and ethical boundaries between a bilingual attorney's role and the role of an independent, neutral court interpreter.
